Why It Matters
Each year, millions of pounds of clothing and textiles end up in U.S. landfills — much of it still usable or recyclable. In today’s throwaway culture, clothing is often discarded long before the end of its useful life. Think Green Recycling exists to change that by providing a simple, convenient, and responsible way to keep textiles in circulation instead of letting them go to waste.
By donating and reusing clothing, we conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Producing new textiles requires enormous amounts of energy, water, and raw materials — which means every garment reused or recycled makes a measurable difference for our planet.
Conserving Natural Resources
Textile production is one of the most resource-intensive industries in the world. Since 1980, textile consumption in the United States has increased nearly fivefold, with the average person purchasing more than 81 pounds of clothing each year. Of that, only a small fraction is reused or recycled.
When clothing is donated through Think Green Recycling, each item collected helps reduce landfill waste and preserves the energy, water, and raw materials required to manufacture new garments.
Curbing Water Pollution
Producing enough cotton for a single T-shirt can require up to 1,300 gallons of water. Conventional cotton farming and textile dyeing are major contributors to global water pollution, accounting for nearly 20% of industrial wastewater worldwide.
By extending the life of clothing through reuse and recycling, we help reduce the demand for new cotton production and the harmful dyes and chemicals that threaten freshwater ecosystems.
Reducing Air Pollution & Emissions
For every pound of clothing reused instead of newly manufactured, approximately seven pounds of greenhouse gas emissions are prevented from entering the atmosphere.
The textile industry releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds, and other harmful emissions that contribute to climate change, smog, and respiratory illness. Reuse and recycling play a direct role in reducing these impacts and improving air quality.
Fighting Solid Waste
From excess yarn and fabric scraps to packaging materials, textile manufacturing generates significant solid waste — much of which ends up in landfills.
