26 billion pounds of clothing and textiles go into landfills each year, yet 95 percent could be reused or recycled.

A recent survey revealed that the average American discards approximately 81 pounds of clothing each year. This adds up to more than 26 billion pounds of textiles ending up in landfills annually—an environmental challenge we can all help address.

Many individuals who chose not to donate cited convenience as the primary reason, with one in three saying it was simply “easier” to throw items away. Additionally, 54 percent of those respondents believed no one would want their used clothing.

However, donating makes a significant impact. By contributing to the secondhand and textile reuse industry, donors help support a thriving economic sector that employs nearly 100,000 workers and generates over $1 billion in wages across the United States.

At Think Green Recycling, we make clothing donation easy, accessible, and impactful—helping communities reduce landfill waste while supporting jobs and sustainable practices.
